What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, which in Chinese means “wind and water,” is an art that uses the directions of a compass, natural elements and colors to achieve balance of energies through the organization of the furniture and decorations in your home. .

The basic principle of this ancient practice is that all objects have energy or “chi”, and that by placing things correctly, the flow of positive energy or the good “vibe” can be increased or decreased in the life of a person.

Whether you believe in the philosophies of Feng Shui or not, many of its principles are simply good tips for achieving good design or decoration of your home.

Let us then improve, through Feng Shui, the flow of chi (vital energy or spiritual energy), and create harmonious environments that support health, wealth and invite happiness. And what better place to start than your bedroom? This is the room that can benefit the most from harmony and peace.

How to implement Feng Shui in the bedroom

Your bedroom should offer a calm or yin environment, not an active or yang environment. And here are 8 suggestions to achieve it.

1- Use colors to attract the energy you want .

  • Feng Shui practitioners recommend warm, rich earth and skin tones such as terracotta, copper, coral, cream, peach, cinnamon and cocoa to create a cozy atmosphere in the bedroom.
  • Soft natural colors such as light blues, greens and lavenders create a calm environment that invites healing energy.
  • Pink and red are the colors of love, and using them in the bedroom can increase the romance in our relationships. Bright reds and oranges are typically associated with yang or masculine energy and are more stimulating, which can affect good rest. But you should also know that neither of the two energies is purely masculine or feminine (if you see their symbol, the two colors of yin and yang have an eye of the other color) because they cannot live without each other. The advice is to imitate its use with sheets, decorative pillows or bedspreads and attract love into your life!

In short, select colors that promote relaxation and health, mixed with a touch of slightly brighter colors to attract romance in our relationships.

2- Locate your Bed Carefully. All tips for locating the bed with Feng Shui should be understood as a suggestion since most rooms in our Western culture do not build houses with Feng Shui in mind. Ok, here we go! Ideally, your bed should not be located next to a window, or directly in front of a door, as “chi” or energy travels through and between both places, and can be detrimental to falling asleep and achieving good rest. . In Feng Shui, the "dominant position" of the bed is as far from the bedroom door as possible, but in a location that still allows you to keep an eye on the entrance to the room. The corner of the room diagonally facing the door is usually best, as it moves away from the door while keeping the bed out of direct alignment with the opening of the room, which is conducive to sleep, relaxation and healthy chi.

Try not to place your bed under the lowest angle of a gable roof or a ceiling fan or heavy beam. These items contain "depressing energy" that will literally pull you down while you sleep. If you have no other option, adding a canopy to the bed or fabrics suspended from the ceiling or rafters is the Feng Shui “cure” to the problem.

Whatever you do, make sure your feet are not pointing toward the door. In traditional Chinese culture, this is called the "Death Position" because the deceased is carried feet first. If you can't avoid it, and in many rooms there is no way to arrange everything for good Feng Shui, use a footboard. The solution wasn't that difficult, right?

Finally, leave enough space around the bed for the energy to flow freely, and for each person to get up easily.

3- Order the disorder. In Feng Shui, clutter symbolizes unfinished business and impedes progress in life. Try to keep the room tidy to allow chi to flow freely around the room. Do not use the space under the bed to store things as this will block energy and cause stagnation in your life. Tip: Healthy, green plants placed in the corners prevent energy from stagnating there.

4- For good Feng Shui avoid mirrors. Avoid placing mirrors in front of, next to, or above the bed, as they are said to increase the alertness of the room. In addition to bouncing too much energy around the room to allow for good rest, mirrors are believed to reflect and magnify problems and worries. Some Feng Shui practitioners even say that mirrors in the bedroom can invite a third party to interfere in your relationship. If your closet doors have mirrors, treat them as windows and hang curtains in front of them that you can close when night falls. What a good idea, right? The room will look even cozier. Another option is to cover the mirrors with a pretty cloth when it's time to sleep.

5- Close the door to distractions. As much as we like to have television in the bedroom, TV is a source of distraction and disturbs sleep. And if you're not willing to part with the TV, store it in a closet or cabinet so you can literally "close the door" while you sleep. A cloth draped over the television when not in use will serve a similar purpose.

6- Create a space to be as a couple. If you want to share your life with someone, even if that person is not in your life yet, Feng Shui recommends decorating everything in pairs. Two nightstands, two lamps, balanced decorations like a vase with flowers in front of a decorative painting. This will also make relationships more harmonious.

7- Open your eyes to beauty. A common Feng Shui strategy for choosing art and other objects to decorate your room is to select those that represent things you would like to see manifest in your life, whether success, love or inner peace. In the bedroom, Feng Shui professionals suggest hanging your favorite piece of art on the wall opposite the bed. Make the last thing you see before going to sleep and the first thing you see when you open your eyes something that makes you feel happy and inspired.

8- Create a refuge for the senses. In addition to achieving a room that is pleasant to look at, fill your room with things that are pleasant to smell, touch, taste and sound. Candles, potpourri and even plants that help with relaxation and good rest such as jasmine, valerian, lavender, daisies, pothos, bamboo palm or the ribbon, spider or love bow plant.
